Costs for converting a VW T3 into an electric campervan

We are often asked how much our project costs and how this very high sum of €70,000 in project costs comes together. Of course, if you already have a restored base vehicle, a good third of these costs are already eliminated.

In this blog post, we would like to take a closer look at the topic of costs.

The project costs of the E-Luise are divided into three sub-areas:

  1. The basic vehicle and the restoration (approx. €21,000)
Our base vehicle is an ageing and already very rusty VW T3 camper van with pop-up roof and camping extension (see cover picture). It cost us just under €5,000 to buy. Then, of course, there was the very complex restoration. This cost us around €16,000. All in all, around €21,000.
  2. The batteries and the battery management system (approx. €23,000)
The most expensive part of such a conversion is the batteries. We will install batteries with a total capacity of approx. 60 kWh in the E-Luise. This will give us a range of 200 - 300 kilometres. To ensure that the batteries last a long time and always work perfectly, we also need a battery management system (BMS). All in all, this will cost us around €23,000, but you can of course make savings on this item if you wish. Roughly speaking, you can expect to pay around €7,000 - €8,000 per 100 kilometres of range. So depending on how much range you want to achieve in the end, the cost of the batteries will change.
  3. Components, labour and typing (approx. €26,000)
The components, by which we mean the motor, the controller, the chargers and everything else you need for the conversion. In our case, the cost of the components is around €17,000. However, savings can also be made on this item if necessary. For example, we install power steering in the E-Luise, which is quite expensive. However, we see this as a sensible investment, especially for rental purposes. Depending on the power and charging speed, you can also reduce the cost of the chargers. Then there are the labour costs and typing. These costs amount to a further €7,000 - €10,000.

All in all, the aforementioned €70,000. But as already briefly mentioned, it is also possible to realise such a conversion more cheaply. For example, if you already have a suitable base vehicle or if you reduce the range. In general, however, you can also start with a low range and gradually extend it by installing additional battery modules. In this way, you can at least spread the costs somewhat.
