Hard to believe: Another eventful year is coming to an end. This is the third year for Schau aufs Land and we are happy that there have been many wonderful experiences and encounters on the farm again. A lot has also happened for us this year, so we would like to take you on a little journey through our year 2022.

At Schau aufs Land you will find not only natural pitches at farms, but also numerous supply and waste disposal stations in Austria & Slovenia. You can use our filter function in our app to search specifically for available waste disposal stations.

For two years, Bianca Blasl has been travelling from farm to farm in her Red Lightning. In her blog melange.in.gummistiefeln she takes us on this journey. With Schmäh and good food, she wants to build a bridge between us and our food and those who make it. This is how we found each other. Now the roving reporter has set out to test our app and find out what it all brings to everyone involved.

Have you ever stopped and asked yourself who shapes the Austrian countryside that we love to spend time in and appreciate so much? There are more than 150,000 farmers who cultivate the countryside every day. A number that is constantly decreasing (several farms close every day) and a profession that is hard work and requires nerves of steel.

Since our launch in spring 2020, we have done a lot and have many ideas and great implementations on our list for the future. However, we also have to be consciously aware of being sustainably economical. Unfortunately, we need to make a small price adjustment this year. The price for the annual subscription will therefore be € 39.90 from April 2022.

We want to use the 24th of December as an opportunity to compensate for the kilometres we drive with our motorhomes together with you out there. Although the first priority is still to avoid & reduce, many of us still accumulate a few kilometres over the year.

In March 2020, three adventurous young people from Graz fulfilled a dream and launched their travel platform "Schau aufs Land". And how could it be otherwise - the Greimlhof also became part of it. You can read here how the farm fared with the guests in summer 2021.

In many places we are surrounded by them, whether we like it or not. Sometimes they seem annoying, but without their existence, ours would be threatened. We are talking about: Insects.

Impressive facts and figures
Insects are one of the most diverse groups of animals on earth and have a wide variety of shapes and colours. Between 925,000 and 1,000,000 species are currently known and scientifically documented - the number of unreported cases is probably much higher. According to estimates, there could be between 2 and 50 million species. A wide range, which underlines the need for further research. In Austria, the population is estimated at 40,000 insect species, 345 of which are endemic, i.e. only found in Austria.

Schau aufs Land stands for sustainable camping travel. We very often get the question "sustainable travel with a motorhome, what is sustainable about that?". This is a good and important question, and I would like to address it in this blog post.

"Every known form of mobility inevitably causes environmental pollution. Only the extent of the burden can be changed".

CO2 offsetting, also known as climate compensation, is a way of compensating for currently emitted greenhouse gas emissions. However, this does not mean that the greenhouse gas emissions already produced in our atmosphere will disappear, but that they will be saved in the future through climate protection measures or projects.

One thing first, we are producing far too many CO2 emissions per capita in Austria - and in Europe in general - and are thus steadily driving climate change. If we do not change anything, we will not reach the urgent reduction targets confirmed by science, which will lead to catastrophic changes on our planet.

Once again, we have chosen a special farm from the Schau aufs Land range.
The organically certified Madlenserhof is located in Dafins, a district of Zwischenwasser, above Rankweil in Vorarlberg.

The organic farm is basically a mother cow farm, but when we arrive they spend their holiday of several months on the alp. As befits a farm dog, there are also rabbits, geese and common laying hens.

In this blog post, we would like to introduce you to another ingenious sustainable concept that we can only warmly recommend. And that is Solidarity Farming.

It is about solidarity and community and, of course, about agriculture. The concept originated in Japan in the 1960s. It has now been practised in Austria for almost 10 years. But what exactly is behind it?

Fritz Zehentmayr stands in the cosy parlour of his farm and holds a small glass of amber liquid up to the light: "Do you see the streaks on the glass? That's how you recognise it!" We also swirl our glasses, the oily film is clearly visible. We have recently come to know: These are essential oils, a sign of quality. "You can distinguish noble brandy from simple schnapps by these streaks!

For our first SAL check-in, we chose a very special farm: The Seebacherhof in Bad Mitterndorf in the Styrian Salzkammergut is an organically controlled Demeter farm. Here, machines and tractors are not used at all, harvesting is mostly done by hand, ploughing is done by the farm's own Noriker horses.

The second best thing next to travelling with a camper is meeting and exchanging ideas with like-minded people. That's why we will be in Austria this year with our campers and with Schau aufs Land at two Camper & Vanlife meetings and would be delighted to meet some of you there in person.

In this blog post, we would like to briefly introduce the two events to you: The Van Days and the Camper Van Summit Meeting.

More and more people are realising how important and actually inevitable it is to live more sustainably now and in the future. As a result, more and more people are looking for ways to consume and live more sustainably. But where can I actually find fair fashion, where can I shop without packaging or have my broken things repaired? Where and when is there a zero-waste workshop or a lecture on sustainable travel?

We decided right from the start of the platform that for every membership sold (excluding voucher payments) we would donate €1 to a project or initiative that works towards a more sustainable future. For the first year, we have chosen the climate protection projects of the Boku Vienna.

Tourism is responsible for 8 % of global greenhouse gas emissions (and rising) and thus contributes directly to climate change. This also includes travelling by motorhome.

Travelling in one's own four walls, be it with a small camper, a large motorhome or a caravan, is booming like never before this year. There are some who are very happy about this - our participating businesses, for example - but there are also very many who are annoyed and also complain about it.

Because wild camping is also becoming more popular, but also leads to more problems. Prohibitions are often ignored and rules are not followed. As a result, nature and the local people often suffer. This must be avoided at all costs.

After Leonard has dealt intensively with the negative impacts of tourism and the topic of sustainable tourism in the course of his Master's thesis, he is called upon from time to time as a speaker on these topics.

At the end of each lecture, we always talk about how you can travel more sustainably as a traveller. We have summarised these possibilities for you in this article.

We would like to introduce Micha and Lukas and their great platform nahgenuss. They also come from Graz and want to strengthen smaller family organic farms with their platform. Because:

But the best thing is for them to tell us themselves who they are and how they got there.

biologisch.at provides an overview of the Austrian organic landscape and helps to find organic farms and products as well as events in the surrounding area. This is achieved with a categorised organic industry directory - from organic farm shops to organic fashion shops - coupled with a radius search. In order to be listed in the directory or at the events, the organic entrepreneurs can make an entry free of charge, which will then be checked and published.

Did you know that there are 15 sustainably certified campsites in Austria?

To show you a good example of a sustainable campsite, we spoke to Gerhard from the Au an der Donau campsite in Upper Austria. This campsite can claim all three, the Eco Camping Award, the Austrian Eco-label and the European Eco-label.

We are in the press! After Leon's interview with the APA, we were surprised by a radio report on Tuesday morning and immediately afterwards by a few newspaper articles. As a result, we received so much positive feedback that we immediately had one of our longest, but most motivated working days! We are still happy about all the kind words and the great feedback.

Regionality has never been as important as it is now!
In times of the Corona crisis, we are all moving closer together - even if not in direct contact. We see a multitude of beautiful solidarity assistance that did not exist on this scale before.

What is also becoming very clear at this time is the enormous value of regionality. Because one thing is clear: you cannot import food security!

Exactly three months ago, the three of us met at Startup Playground 2019.
Every year, Ideentriebwerk Graz organises this brilliant event - with the aim of networking the start-up scene in Graz. A big thank you for this, because it has already worked really well for us!

Premiere for Schau aufs Land!
Last Thursday, we were able to present our project to around 120 Sonnentor partner businesses at the Sonnentor cultivation meeting.

The presentation was very important for us to get direct feedback on Schau aufs Land from farms for the first time. The feedback and inputs were very positive and we are looking forward to further developing the Schau aufs Land concept together with such open-minded farms on the basis of these opinions.

After a short but very intensive period of preparation, we are launching our online presence today and would like to briefly explain what Schau auf's Land is all about:
Schau aufs Land is a platform that brings together motorhome travellers and farms and creates added value for all.

From experience, campervan and motorhome travellers are always looking for close-to-nature and idyllic pitches in the countryside. In addition, we believe that there are a lot of farms that would be happy to have a new and open-minded group of customers. So why not bring these two groups together?

We want to bring more sustainability into camping travel & create awareness for organic farming!
Coincidence or fate? We don't know. But it fits! A long chain of events we found each other! We have all been searching for a long time for a project in which we can invest our heart and soul and our vision of making the world a little better.

We are all passionate campervan travellers, love to tinker with our buses and love to live as ecologically and sustainably as possible, both on the road and at home.
